Guide

The basic idea behind this project is to take a selection of the photographs in Abbott’s book and use them to retrace her steps, exploring the locations as they are today. I try to start with an image captured while standing in the same place and framing it in the same way she did. This is often not possible, of course, due to intervening redevelopment.  More importantly, my objective is not a faithful recreation of her photographs—they are waypoints in an exploration of New York.  That said, I have followed the book’s organization to structure the site.

Anything with the words “changing New York” in the title is by definition a work in progress, and this project is no exception.  Only Section I is accessible for now. The remaining ones are grayed out.

And now, without further ado, let’s get started.
